Our Mission: To empower residents in distressed urban core neighborhoods to lead healthy, prosperous lives in thriving, self-sustaining communities.
Our History: Urban Strategies, Inc. is a national nonprofit with extensive experience in implementing place-based human capital development strategies in public housing communities that are undergoing comprehensive physical revitalization. Founded in 1978, Urban Strategies works to help communities build safe neighborhoods, enhanced schools, and a range of comprehensive human service supports. Our work is focused in urban core residential communities and is designed to build social and economic mobility for low-income families living in mixed-income communities.
Urban Strategies has broad experience in the facilitation of critical partnerships needed to implement and sustain the human and systems components of community redevelopment. Over the years, we have achieved success in three endeavors critical to building strong communities:
With more than 35 years of experience, Urban Strategies currently works with over 19,000 families in public and mixed-income housing communities, and has consulted or served as the Community and Supportive Services (CSS) implementer in ten HOPE VI communities, and we currently serve as the lead implementation partner for people initiatives on three Choice Neighborhoods Implementation grants.
Our Values: People are at the heart of our neighborhoods, and their capacity to learn, earn and thrive makes community change possible. At Urban Strategies we know that successful community development requires a comprehensive and integrated set of strategies around building people and building place. Coupling human development with physical development allows us to identify, assess, and address issues, to develop strong partnerships, and to leverage resources to meet the community’s critical needs early on and throughout the revitalization process.
