Lucy Smith selected as 2016 Community Builders Network Resident Awardee

We are excited to announce that the Community Builders Network has selected Ms. Lucendia ‘Lucy’ Smith, a Preservation Square resident as the recipient of their 2016 Community Builders Network Resident Award.

Ms. Lucy Smith is a perfect example of a resident with a passion for community building.  Ms. Smith has played an integral part as an advocate for consistent positive changes within her neighborhood during the Choice Neighborhood Initiative Near North Side campaign. Through her efforts, she assisted Urban Strategies’ Near North Side Choice surveying team with identifying residents to survey, recruiting residents to attend meetings and providing feedback in focus groups. While Urban Strategies conducted door-to-door surveys pertaining to a multi-year, collaborative revitalization effort in her community, Ms. Smith was present and resourceful every step of the way. She also spearheaded a neighborhood women’s empowerment group because she felt there was a need to galvanize young women n the neighborhood in a positive way. She is a board member for the I. Jerome Flance Early Learning Center and has previously served on the COVAM Community Coalition. As a valued member of the community, Ms. Smith was invited to travel to Washington D.C. for the 2015 and 2016 HUD Convening as a respected community leader and resident. Ms. Smith understands that in order for communities to have sustaining, positive change there has to be consistent communication from the residents in those communities and the Near North Side steering committees wouldn’t be able to be as successful without her leadership and input.
