This summer at Bienville Basin, we are providing families with two summer enrichment programs that will cater to youth of all ages and their families. The Excellence, Encouragement, Education (E-Camp) Program began its third year on Tuesday July 12, while our Cool Scholars Extended Leaning Program transitions from Summer 2015’s pilot program to full capacity on Wednesday, July 13.
Excellence, Encouragement, Education (E-Camp) is a four week program for youth 14 -18 years of age that encourages workforce readiness, promotes positive academic engagement, and fulfilling social interactions. We anticipated 15 students to participate; to date, 17 students from 7th grade to college freshman have enrolled. These students attend several schools within the CNI footprint, which include Success Preparatory Academy, McDonogh 35, and Joseph S. Clark High School. Several participants are current and former residents of Bienville Basin community.
Cool Scholars Extended Literacy Program is an extension of our after school program, Maturing Champions in Treme thru Extended Learning (MCTEL). During the pilot program, a third of the 25 MCTEL participants enrolled and successfully completed the remote program. This level of participation encouraged us to continue the programming onsite at Bienville Basin. We anticipated 20 participants to enroll which includes parents/guardians. To date 24 participants have enrolled. This six-week program is designed for youth 4-13 years old and their family to come together during weekly evening sessions. Throughout the six weeks, participants will engage with books, activities, and community members that will enhance their reading comprehension skills and provide a space for families to work together.
