On Wednesday, January 22, 2014, Urban Strategies and community partners will host the Harmony Oaks Open House, sponsored by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The Harmony Oaks Open House will honor the collaborative input that inspired the revitalization of the former C.J. Peete Public Housing development and its surrounding neighborhood into the thriving mixed-income community now known as Harmony Oaks. A daylong program is scheduled at various venues in and around the neighborhood.
Celebratory activities will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with a host of dignitaries and supports of the redevelopment effort and, immediately following, a series of panel discussions to showcase the high level of engagement from community partners in supporting residents during and beyond revitalization. Session topics will include discussions on:
– The tremendous work of resident leaders who championed the transition of the former C.J. Peete Resident Council to a newly established neighborhood association that operates under a mixed-income housing model;
– The intentional connections between housing, commercial and supportive services as a best practice approach to community building;
– The impact of local and national philanthropy in the initial planning for Harmony Oaks
In addition, the day will feature tours of the Harmony Oaks Apartments, developed by McCormack Baron Salazar with KAI Design + Build and managed by McCormack Baron Ragan; the for-sale homes built by Harmony Neighborhood Development located throughout the Central City community; and the new state-of-the-art Carter G. Woodson Elementary School. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy scheduled performances highlighting the community’s talent, and to participate in activities including a mini health and service fair.
Tours and community activities are free and open to the public. For more information call 504-894-6626.
